How do you tell girl bison from boy bison? Thanks to a new share by a zoo in Illinois, no need to wonder any more. They have a bison named Joe and another named Judy and explain the differences.

No need to hide the children's eyes, I won't be giving a lesson about the birds and the bees here. Just some small differences between female and male bison thanks to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

The National Park Service further breaks this bison gender bender down for you:

A bull’s head is wider and shaped more like a triangle than the female bison; its “forehead” fur is much thicker, as is the fur on its forelegs; and its beard is thicker. A cow’s horns are slightly more curved and slender than a bull’s. In addition, a cow’s shoulders are narrower than its hips while a male’s shoulders are broader than its hips.

When I was a kid, I innocently asked my dad about what was different about girls. Ever the comedian, he said that during slow dances, girls were the ones that danced backwards. Genius. He never explained if this worked the same way with bison. I can only wonder.

Back to the zoo bison in Chicago, this is one of the many reasons why I continue the Brookfield Zoo a must-follow on Facebook as they often share fun content like this.
