Now that I'm engaged, my mom and dad have been sending me home with all of my junk that has been in their basement. Little did I know I would uncover a national treasure with the 1976 "Better Homes and Gardens: Microwave Cook Book."

Some of the recipes inside are quite frightful such as Chicken Livers Peking, Quick Fish Chowder and Seafood-Asparagus Casserole.

I really wanted to work on my cooking skills for my soon-to-be-husband, so I thought I would test out a fool proof recipe for Brizz. (Let's face it, you can't mess up macaroni and cheese. Or can you?)

Here's what you need:

  • 1 1/4 cup hot tap water
  • 1/2 cup elbow macaroni
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup shredded sharp American cheese (2 ounces)

Seem's simple enough.

First, combine the water, macaroni and salt. Cook in microwave for 7 to 8 minutes, uncovered, stirring twice. Drain.

Then, add butter and onion and cook for about 1 1/2 minutes.

Blend in flour, salt, and a dash of pepper. Stir in milk and Worcestershire. Cook, uncovered until thick and bubbly, or for about 2 or 3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.

I have to say it turned out to look good. Maybe they were up to something with this 'cooking from scratch in the microwave' stuff. The true test, is the taste test.

What would Brizz think?

He really liked it! He really did! Just ask him. Looks like I know what I'm having for dinner tonight.
