Guns N’ Roses Kicks off 1991 Tour at Alpine Valley
Alpine Valley was the launching pad for Guns N' Roses as they kicked off their 1991 world tour, and I was there.
The band had grown with a new drummer, some additional backing singers, and a stage the size of my house. The date was May 24th 1991, and GnR prepared for world domination by starting the tour in East Troy, Wisconsin.
I hit the road from Freeport with my buddy Mike Kounkel from Freeport to Alpine Valley. "The Use of Illusion" cassettes were jamming, the mullets and cut-off t-shirts were in full force and we were pumped.
So here is this band we both loved, about to kick-off a tour that would cement them into category of rock and roll "heavy weights" and we are there. Here was the set list from that night:
- Right Next Door to Hell
- Mr. Brownstone
- Bad Obsession
- Dust N’ Bones
- Double Talkin’ Jive
- Speak Softly Love (Andy Williams cover) (Godfather Theme)
- Pretty Tied Up
- Civil War
- My Michelle
- Patience
- Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Bob Dylan cover) (with intro of Only Women Bleed)
- Drum Solo (Matt Sorum)
- Slash Guitar Solo (Slash)
- Live and Let Die (Wings cover)
- Welcome to the Jungle
- Estranged
- Paradise City
- Sweet Child O’ Mine
