I was a lucky kid growing up. I got to experience a lot of fun things with my family. My parents were always going on adventures. We went into Chicago quite a bit to enjoy all the sights and attractions. We had some great family traditions, too.

One of my favorite traditions was going to Chicago during the holidays. We would go look at all the decorations. Check out the toy departments for my wish list. That's when I got to see Santa. Plus, every year we would go to the Walnut Room at Marshall Field's to have lunch under the giant Christmas tree.
The only thing about eating there was that we had to wait in line for a very long time. There were no reservations back in those days. It was so worth the wait. Nowadays, they do take appointments, but you'd better make them early.

While Christmas is still more than three months away, the focus will soon be on the holiday season at Chicago's famed Walnut Room.
For those whom a plentiful meal and trip to see the magnificent tree has become a storied tradition, mark your calendars, holiday reservations open to the public on Thursday, Sept. 25.
The first and longest-running restaurant to ever open in a department store, the Walnut Room is located in Macy’s at 111 N. State St. diners can enjoy their meals in the 17,000 square foot dining room sitting around the brightly decorated, 45-foot “Great Tree."
