I don't think it's a surprise that Chicago is one of the worst places in the whole United States for drivers. In fact, the Windy City is ranked # 7 and that's not in a good way. It's getting harder and harder to avoid the backups anymore.
In the U.S. Chicago drivers spend the most time in traffic so they burn a lot of gas, which isn't cheap. Other bad ratings for being behind the wheel are 3rd worst overall experience, the slowest rush hour speed, and the 5th longest commute time.
Obviously, you can't walk everywhere in Chicago but in some cases, it's a much better option. The Windy City was named the most walkable city in the United States. I can totally see that. I've spent many days exploring the city on foot.
When you're in the actual downtown area, it takes an average of 28 minutes to walk from attraction to attraction. That's not bad at all considering how long you'll be stuck in your car if driving. Don't forget the beautiful lakefront, beaches, parks, and plenty of places to get your steps in.
