Century-Old Cemetery in Illinois May Explain Ghosts in an Elementary School

Would you be uncomfortable sending your children to a school that may be haunted? Depending on the circumstances, there might be a choice in the matter. This is a conversation that brewed in the office while sharing this story.

The cemetery, which opened in the 1800s and closed in 1945, was once the final resting place for more than 3,000 souls.

Over the course of several decades, all the bodies have been removed, but not all at once.

When the cemetery closed in 1945 most of the graves were moved, however, it wasn't until 1999 when all the bodies had officially been moved.

Where the gravesites once occupied, is now covered with a playground, tennis court, walking paths, lots of grass, and lots of trees. It is also where you will find Channing Elementary School. Today, unless you're a local Elgin history buff, it is seemingly forgotten.

Elgin newspaper reporter, Juan Castillo grew up in the area and heard a lot of eerie stories about the school.

Growing up, I remember hearing weird and creepy stories all the time of people that attended the school and from others that had simply heard some stories.

Some of the stories he heard are enough to give anyone the chills, especially a small child.

GHOSTS ROAMING THE HALLS?

Some of the stories he shared included a ghost of a woman noticeable in hallways before quickly disappearing, the feeling of a presence behind students who would look behind them and see nothing, even feeling sudden chills when alone in hallways.

Aise from being a local with historical knowledge, the only other way you might know of the history of the land where the school and park sits is a little sign letting you know it was originally Elgin's first public cemetery.
