If your son or daughter are heading off to college this year, keep these things in mind. It will be sure to make you feel, eh hem... OLD.

I get so excited every August when The Beloit College Mindset List comes out. This year it is all about the young men and women of the class of 2020.

The Mindset List has been put out each year since August of 1998, The creators of the list at Beloit College take a look at cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall. Tom McBride, Charles Westerberg and Ron Nief are the annual creators of this list.

I thoroughly enjoy reading through the list each year. Not only does it offer a bit of comic relief, it sheds an incredible light on how different the world is for each generation.

For example, one that hit me pretty hard was:

7. The Sandy Hook tragedy is their Columbine.

I will never forget what happened in April of 1999. I was a sophomore in high school and was glued to the television watching the coverage. I remember feeling so incredibly nervous and anxious to go to school the next day. It was an event that shaped the way I viewed my life, my school and my peers.

The class of 2020 will only learn about the Columbine shootings via books and hearsay. Yet the Sandy Hook tragedy rocked their worlds, much like Columbine did to me.

Here are a few of my favorites from this year's list:

1. There has always been a digital swap meet called eBay.
3. They never heard Harry Caray try to sing during the seventh inning at Wrigley Field.
5. West Nile has always been a virus found in the U.S.
8. Cloning has always been a mundane laboratory procedure.
10. The United States has always been at war.
13. SpongeBob SquarePants has always lived at Bikini Bottom.
15. They have never had to watch or listen to programs at a scheduled time.
20. TV ads for casinos have always been permitted to mention that there is actually gambling going on in there.
22. Laws against on-the-job harassment have always applied to parties of the same sex.
27. They disagree with their parents as to which was the “first” Star Wars episode.
40. Some have always questioned the sexual orientation of certain Teletubbies.
48. Deceased men have always been able to procreate.
49. John Elway and Wayne Gretzky have always been retired.
50. They have never seen billboard ads for cigarettes.
52. Airline tickets have always been purchased online.
