A 90-year-old man was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Florida may serve time in jail for feeding the homeless.

Arnold Abbott who is 90 years old is an advocate for the homeless. He is the head 'Love Thy Neighbor' a group that has fed the homeless for over 20 years.

Arnold along with two pastors were arrested for feeding needy people on the street.

Arnold took to Facebook and explained:

As contemplated on Sunday, I was arrested for feeding the homeless and received a citation to appear in court. However, only 4 people were fed before an officer told me to, "Drop that plate immediately!" As though it were a weapon I was holding, and to go with him to the police car. After a time I was allowed to get the food back on the van and we were able to find a small churches driveway, where we set up, and fed the people who followed us over.
On Wednesday at 5:30 we will feed on the beach. When confronted by the police, which I expect will happen, I will present them with a copy of the court order of 1999 which allowed us to feed on the beach, without interference from the city.
It is my hope that they will honor that agreement but it is possible that they won't, alluding to the new agreement which scrapped the old one, and I could be arrested again...
With Love, Arn

I find this to be absolutely disgusting. I could not believe that this man, and two priests were arrested. They were just trying to help those in need. Since when did compassion and generosity become crimes?

According to RawStory.com, Fort Lauderdale has a new ordinance that prohibits people to serve food outdoors without portable bathrooms. This new law took in effect on Friday, and Arnold was arrested on Sunday.

With this new ordinance, Arnold could be facing up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

In his Facebook post highlighted above, Arnold notes that he plans to serve to the homeless again tomorrow on the beach. He has been arrested there before in 1999, sued the city and won.
