On April 21, 1967 a powerful F4 tornado ripped through Belvidere, injuring hundreds and killing twenty four people, mostly school children. It occurred at about 3:50pm, as school was letting out. Belvidere High School was demolished by the twister that continued into McHenry County before breaking up. Workers at the Chrysler plant were in the path along with a hospital, grocery store and many homes.

Near the performing arts center at the new Belvidere High School there is a sculpture acknowledging that tragic day.
