Something happened on this day in rock history that nobody really saw coming. On July 12, 2005 David Gilmour announced that he would be sharing the stage with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright for the first time in twenty-four years. The occasion was the Live 8 concerts. The idea of the shows were to convince the G8 nations to provide more assistance to poorer nations along with debt forgiveness.

Many big acts took part, including Paul McCartney, The Who, U2, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Deep Purple, and Elton John. It was Pink Floyd that stole the show. They did not disappoint. Not surprisingly, they sounded great. Perhaps my favorite part of their time on stage was Waters' short announcement prior to "Wish You Were Here," where he proclaimed, "It's actually quite emotional standing up here with these three guys after all these years. Standing to be counted with the rest of you. Anyway, we're doing this for everyone who's not here, but particularly, of course, for Syd." Syd being Syd Barrett, founding member and original guitarist and frontman for the band. It's no secret that Barrett was the inspiration behind the album "Wish You Were Here." Syd even visited the band as they were working on the album in 1975. He looked so different that they didn't even recognize him. The visit shook the band to the core, and I have heard that they couldn't even continue working that day. They loved him and it showed in Roger's voice on that day in 2005.

On today's Brizz Record Bin, I dug into the band's earlier catalog and picked the opening cut from one of my favorite albums, "Meddle." The song "One of These Days" is a disturbing, pulse racing, uppercut of a tune. You can feel the madness. Enjoy this performance from their "Live at Pompeii" concert.
