History Of The Annual Guns And Hoses Charity Hockey Game

This amazing game is celebrating its 20th year. It's hard to believe. I've been there for all of them. I'm honored that they ask me back each year to take part in the great day. It's been awesome to watch the event grow and evolve through the years. I believe it's something that the Rockford community should be proud of.

Even before the charity game began, both the Rockford Police and Fire Departments had hockey teams that played in local leagues and even in a few tournaments. Sometimes, the teams would end up playing each other. A couple of players from each team thought it would be a great idea to take on each other to help out the community.

That was when the Guns And Hoses game was born. In the first few years, the games were played at local rinks like Riverview Icehouse and Carlson Ice Arena. There were just a few fans in the stands, mostly family and friends. Now, they pack the seats of the BMO Center. In the beginning, only a couple of bucks went to a local charity. The event now benefits three local foundations. Jaimie Cox Foundation, Greg Lindmark Foundation, and Heartland Hospice.
