Three Numbers to Remember When Stranded in the Cold on Illinois Tollway

The frigid Illinois temps make being stranded on the highway much more dangerous.

Being stranded on the road, no matter the weather conditions is an awful situation to be in.

During the extreme cold, it can be very dangerous, which is why you should make sure you have a cold weather emergency kit in your vehicle that includes things like:

• Gloves
• Boots
• Blankets
• Road flares
• Water
• Flashlight with fresh batteries

When the weather dips way down like it has much of the last week, the Illinois Tollway sends out around-the-clock Zero Weather Road Patrols.

You may have seen them occasionally in the past, during this cold you will see them much more frequently.

These 24-hour Zero Weather Road patrols will search for drivers stranded in disabled vehicles.

The Zero Weather Road patrols will also respond to incoming distress calls. If you are stranded and you don't see the patrol right away, you should use your phone to contact them.

For motorist assistance, dial *999 (star-nine-nine-nine) and then stay in your vehicle until that help arrives.

The Illinois Tollway suggests following these tips as well:

• Be sure your cell phone is fully charged before heading out.
• Be sure tires are properly inflated during cold weather. Tires lose a pound of pressure for every 10 degrees the temperature drops.
• Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up and ensure that you have extra to account for additional driving time if the weather is unfavorable.
• Stranded motorists should turn on their emergency lights and remain in their vehicles until help arrives.
