As of Monday, the coffee chain announced that they will start to phase out plastic straws in all their stores. This will stop Starbucks from producing more than 1 billion in plastic straw waste a year.

This comes on the heels of a trend that seems to be poping up in lots of places and establishments. Going so far as to some governments even banning them.

The recent call to eliminate plastic straws is because of their large contribution to ocean pollution and danger to marine life.

So Starbucks will now serve drinks with a flat, plastic lid with a raised lip you can drink from. Which basically makes it an adult sippy cup.

Drinks like the Frappuccino will still be served with the dome lid, but with a straw made from a compostable plastic or paper. And if you like to drink your caffeinated beverage with a straw, you can request a new eco-friendly version.

Plastic straws aren't the only item on the chopping block at Starbucks. They've already committed $10 million to the development of recyclable, compostable cups for hot drinks too.

The rollout of the new lids will start this fall in Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle.
