Even after Season 28, no one expected The Simpsons to disband anytime soon, especially with some of TV’s biggest records on the horizon. Now, America’s first animated family will officially cross the threshold with a two-season renewal, outpacing one of TV’s biggest milestones in the process.

Just weeks after airing a 600th episode, FOX confirms that The Simpsons will officially return through Seasons 29 and 30, renewing Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and some 200+ others through 2019. A grand total of 669 episodes will put The Simpsons past the scripted episodes record previously held by Gunsmoke at 635.

Or, as Homer put it:

Take that Gunsmoke! You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!

Added FOX, a bit more cogently:

This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series. The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt, Jim and Al. Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series — from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team — you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium. And to the millions of Simpsons fans around the world, thank you for watching all these years. We’re happy to tell you there’s lots more to come.

Season 28 will continue in the meantime, but you know how the old saying goes.
