Unless you're on foot, you might want to avoid downtown Rockford Saturday afternoon.

The Swedish American State Street Mile is happening this Saturday afternoon and it's going to disrupt a lot of traffic.

Beginning at 2:30 the section of State Street between Wyman and Madison (basically the bridge) will be shut down. Then beginning at 4 the rest of the route will be closed which runs all the way to Regan St, just east of Swedish American.

Some other notes to think about when traveling this weekend:

  • 100 Water St. from E. State St. to Market St. as well as the City Market Pavilion Lot at this corner will be closed from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
  • Police traffic control on arterials such as 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 9th Streets will hold cars during individual heats and will permit cross-traffic only when possible. Emergency vehicle access and cars seeking access to Swedish American Hospital will be permitted as necessary.
  • Local businesses will remain open, but neighbors are urged to try and avoid activities on the route. Organizers have also asked motorists to be patient, reduce speed and watch for runners.

This is an awesome annual event so please make sure you're very careful out there and good luck to everyone that's running.
