Pet Safety Tips for The Fourth of July

The Fourth of July celebrations are a lot of fun!  Usually spent at a BBQ with family and friends. Then you close out the evening with a fireworks display. But those displays can be nightmareic for our four-legged friends.

The animal shelters can be a very busy place on July 5th, but there are some tips you can follow to ensure your furry friend doesn't run off out of terror.

Some of the tips petmd.com provided are a bit of just plain common sense, but some should be gone over just in case your pets get freaked out by fireworks.

1. Keep Your Pet Indoors at All Times - Yeah this sounds like a no-brainer, but even if your pet is used to being outside in a cookout type situation doesn't mean one loud boom from a firecracker couldn't make them run off.
2. Have Your Pet Properly Identified - Just in case your furry friend does run off, make sure they are wearing proper ID tags or even microchipped. A recent photo may help too, just in case you need to make a flyer.
3. Don't Put Iscent Repellant on Your Pet that Isn't Pet-Friendly - The same goes for sunscreen. What may not be toxic for people, can be toxic to your pet. If you plan on using one on your pet make sure it ASPCA approved.
4. Keep Glow Jewelry Away From Your Pet - It make help your pet look patriotic, but it's very toxic to your animal. The ASPCA states that while not highly toxic, “excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.”
