Wisconsin, the land of cheese and beer, is known for its quirky and sometimes downright strange laws. From strict regulations on who can serve butter and limiting when and where you can kiss, the Badger State has had some of the most peculiar legislation in the country.

Serving Margarine Is Against the Law in Wisconsin?

We all know Wisconsin has a real thing for dairy, but did you know that serving margarine to someone in Wisconsin is the worst thing you can do? Seriously.

According to Wisconsin State Legislature;

The serving of colored oleomargarine or margarine at a public eating place as a substitute for table butter is prohibited unless it is ordered by the customer.

Here's another quirky thing about butter. According to Wisconsin law, only licensed butter graders are allowed to determine the quality of butter. That's right, folks, only certified butter experts are allowed to judge the delicious dairy product. So, if you're a resident of Wisconsin and you're thinking about starting your own butter grading business, be sure to get that license first or risk the wrath of the butter police.

No Kissing Allowed!

While researching Wisconsin's weirdest laws I came across some real doozies involving kissing, including "it's illegal to kiss on Sundays in Wisconsin" and "it is illegal to kiss on trains in Wisconsin". While I couldn't find any confirmation that kissing on Sundays is against the law in Wisconsin, I did find several websites that claim train smooching in Wisconsin was at one point definitely illegal and not a wise thing to do. Why? I'm not entirely sure, but maybe it has something to do with public hygiene on trains? I did find an article from the Sheboygan Sun that said;

In the interest of public hygiene, a law of 1907 declared, "No person shall spit, expectorate, or deposit any spittle, saliva, phlegm, mucous, tobacco juice or quids of tobacco upon the floor or any part of any railroad car

Kissing does involve saliva so....???

No Silly Bike Riding

This Wisconsin law is specific to Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, but according to nicoletlaw.com;

Sun Prairie City Code 10.32.020 says that no bicyclist shall “practice any trick or fancy riding in any street in the city.”

Basically, no one riding a bike in Sun Prairie is allowed to remove their feet from the pedals or their hands from the handlebars on city streets. Consider yourself warned...

Think those three laws are as weird as they can get? Wrong! Here are some more quirky things that are against the law in Wisconsin...
