New Details Emerge About Sycamore Fire That Destroyed Tom & Jerry’s
Disturbing information has been released about the fire that destroyed the Tom & Jerry's in Sycamore, Illinois on January 31, 2026, and many residents are very concerned.
The Importance of Firefighters
When I was growing up, my dad dedicated a large chunk of his free time to serving and protecting our community as a paid-on-call firefighter for the Cherry Valley Fire Department. He missed a lot of school events, recitals, and life moments because he was busy helping strangers, but I was never bitter about it. I was proud.

I grew up around firehouses and I learned two things quickly: fires and emergencies don't wait, and staffing matters more than people realize.
This is one of the reasons why I was so intrigued by the fire that caused $1.5 million in damage at Tom & Jerry's restaurant in Sycamore, and it’s also why this recent development is so disturbing.
Firehouse Staff Shortage Caused Delayed Response to Tom & Jerry's
A firefighter shortage in Sycamore might not have started the fire at Tom & Jerry's, but not having enough firefighters to drive the ladder truck to the scene may have contributed to the extent of the damage.
An article from mystateline.com says:
At the February 2 Sycamore City Council meeting, Fire Chief Bart Gilmore said the department’s new ladder truck never responded to the fire. He told alderpersons that an ambulance call ten minutes before the fire pulled all available staff from Station No. 2, where the ladder truck is housed. When the fire call came in, no off‑duty personnel returned on recall, leaving the department without enough responders to staff the apparatus.
Here's one important thing I know: firefighters not only need enough people to fight fires, but to keep each other safe as well.
During the City Council meeting, Chief Gilmore also told city leaders that the department has been operating with a staffing shortage for several years, and on March 6 the City of Sycamore issued this statement:
I truly hope these changes help keep Sycamore firefighters safe and make the community feel safer too.
