Major Road Construction Projects Trigger Traffic Delays Across Rockford
Several major road construction projects across Rockford are creating lane closures, detours, and traffic delays as crews work to rebuild key Illinois roadways through this summer.
11th Street Construction Expands Across South Rockford
Drivers traveling through the south side of Rockford are facing continued delays as major construction work pushes forward along 11th Street between Harrison Avenue and Broadway Street.
City crews are conducting daily lane closures between Harrison Avenue and 22nd Avenue while workers complete grading operations, install new sidewalks, and continue lighting upgrades.

The most significant traffic impact remains the full roadway closure on 11th Street from 21st Avenue to 15th Avenue. Crews are removing old pavement and preparing the corridor for a completely rebuilt roadway. At the same time, storm sewer installation continues between Columbia Avenue and 11th Avenue.
City officials said the intersection at 18th Avenue and 11th Street will remain open to east-west traffic until underground sewer work reaches the crossing. Drivers are being urged to follow posted detour routes as construction activity intensifies.
Pedestrian Safety Concerns Near Collins Aerospace
Another noticeable change involves the crosswalk area near Collins Aerospace at the Harrison Avenue end of the project. Existing pedestrian signals have been removed while new traffic signals are installed.
Although the crosswalk remains open, temporary signage is now directing drivers to stop for pedestrians. The temporary setup is expected to remain in place until the upgraded signal system is completed.
Auburn Street and Mason Avenue Projects Add to Traffic Pressure
Construction activity is also increasing on Auburn Street from Central Avenue to Main Street. According to the press release, daily lane closures are underway as crews install a new water main and complete storm sewer upgrades along the eastbound outside lane.
Motorists are being warned to expect backups and delays during peak travel times, and to find alternate routes until construction is completed.

There's a separate reconstruction project on Mason Avenue that is set to begin the week of May 18. This project stretches from the Illinois Route 251 frontage road to the eastern dead end.
This project includes full roadway reconstruction, storm sewer improvements, drainage upgrades, and driveway replacements. Officials expect the project to be completed by June 30, weather permitting.
