SNAP Benefit Changes in Illinois
On May 1, 2026, major changes to SNAP benefits officially went into effect throughout the United States, and thousands of Illinois residents have lost, or are at risk of losing food assistance.
The biggest change to SNAP program involves new work requirements for what the government calls “Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents” (ABAWDs) between the ages of 18 and 64. Under the new rules, recipients must work, volunteer, or participate in approved job training or education programs for at least 80 hours each month to continue receiving benefits.

Winnebago County ranks fourth among the food bank's 13-county service area for the highest number of SNAP recipients at risk of losing benefits. An estimated 6,220 families in the county could be impacted.
Rockford area food banks are going to see much higher demand for their services soon, so the Northern Illinois Food Bank is getting a jump on it by hosting a free food pickup pop-up this weekend.
