More than two dozen firefighters battled a blaze at a 4-family apartment unit in Rockford late on Wednesday night (7/24).

According to the incident report from the Rockford Fire Department, crews responded to 2106 Auburn Street around 9:13 pm on Wednesday and when they arrived on the scene, heavy fire was reported from 2 second-story windows.

"Crews entered the structure and encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions on the 2nd floor," according to the press release. Rockford Fire then requested a second engine for additional manpower to battle the blaze, searched the complex, and "found no one home in any apartment at the time of the fire."

The Rockford Fire Department had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes and had it contained in the apartment where the fire started, according to the report.

RFD said the 4-family residential apartment complex "had working smoke detectors that were activated and audible from the interior upon arrival."

No civilian or fire injuries were reported during the incident, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The estimated loss of the blaze was $275,000, according to the Rockford Fire Department.

26 firefighters, 4 fire engines, 2 ladders, and 2 District Fire Chiefs were on scene for the fire.
