It doesn't matter if you're a seasoned angler or just starting out, many residents say these three locations offer some of the best fishing Northern Illinois has to offer.

Fishing in Illinois

I'll be the first to admit that I am not much of a fisherwoman although I have gone fishing more times than I can count. I don't like using living things to bait a hook, and taking a fish off the line makes me a nervous wreck, but what I dislike the most about fishing is the waiting game.

Sitting in a boat or on a shore line for several hours with a line in the water and zero catches gets way too boring when the joy of relaxation expires after hour number one.

My husband however, is really getting into fishing, and he wants us to go together sometime soon. I could be a lame wife and tell him I'm not going, or I could be agreeable and give fishing another try...with stipulations.

What stipulations, you ask? We need to go to a popular fishing spot where my need for instant fishing gratification is most likely to be satisfied.

The Best Fishing Spots in Northern Illinois

When I went on a search for the best fishing spots in Northern Illinois, I came across an article from Fishing Booker that said these three spots offer the best fishing, and the biggest variety of fish, in Northern Illinois;

1. Chain O' Lakes

This interconnected chain of 12 lakes offers a diverse fishing environment and calm waters, which makes it perfect for all types of fishing skill levels. People say there's a healthy population of walleye, yellow perch, and largemouth bass, there's even some massive muskies.

2. Lake Michigan

Whether you're trolling for salmon and trout in the deep waters or casting for perch and smallmouth bass closer to shore, many people say you're sure to have a productive day fishing on Lake Michigan. The lake is also a great spot to bring your pole on a kayak or canoe so you can explore hidden coves and discover new fishing spots.

3. Mississippi River

Seasoned fisherman say the Mississippi River that cuts through part of Northern Illinois is a great place to battle big fish like catfish, walleye, sauger, and crappie.
