If you could change one thing about Freeport, Illinois, what would it be?

That question sparked a pretty heated debate on the What's Happening in Freeport Facebook page, with residents offering plenty of ideas about what they believe could make the city a better place to live.

Better Roads and Water Top the List

One of the most common responses had to do with infrastructure, with several Freeport residents calling for better roads, with specific concerns about Galena Avenue and the intersection of Harlem and Galena.

Others mentioned sidewalks, including expanded sidewalks and possible bike lanes throughout the city.

Water was another major concern, with residents mentioning water prices and concerns about city water quality. The city has been working on water infrastructure, including breaking ground on a $12.8 million project to "restore clean water within the city," according to a Rockford News First story.

More Jobs, Businesses, and Retail

Economic development also came up frequently in the Facebook comments, with Freeport residents saying they would like to see more good-paying jobs, more industry, and more businesses to occupy the vacant commercial buildings around the city.

One post suggested incentives to attract businesses, while another specifically mentioned putting the old MetLife building back into use. Others called for more retail variety, and some recommended putting a grocery store at the Meadows Mall.

Housing, Recreation, and Help for Those in Need

Housing and services were another major part of the conversation, with residents wanting more affordable, well-maintained housing, homeless facilities with social services, and assistance for families and pets.

Others want more things for young people to do, including a teen center, basketball courts, a skate facility, and other recreational opportunities.

Some Residents Want Government Changes, Too

Several comments on Facebook focused on Freeport city government, with suggestions ranging from greater accountability and budget transparency to changes in elected leadership.
