Illinois Lawmakers Want to Make This Illegal Starting June 1
A proposal moving through the Illinois Senate could dramatically change what’s available behind the counter at gas stations, convenience stores, and vape shops across the state.
But the biggest impact may be on adult consumers who legally purchase these products today.
Illinois Senate Bill 3148 Explained

SB3148, known as the Flavored Tobacco Ban Act, would prohibit the sale of all flavored tobacco and nicotine products statewide. That includes menthol cigarettes, flavored cigars, cigar wraps, vape liquids, and any nicotine product that uses flavoring, or even packaging that suggests a flavor.
In short, if it tastes like anything other than tobacco, it could be banned.
What This Means for Adult Smokers in Illinois
While flavored products are often discussed in the context of youth prevention, the proposal would apply to adults as well. Millions of Illinois residents who currently purchase menthol cigarettes or flavored vape products would no longer be able to buy them legally within state lines.
Retailers wouldn’t just lose product… they could lose their licenses.

Penalties for Illinois Retailers
Under the bill, the Illinois Department of Human Services would oversee enforcement. The Department of Revenue could suspend retailer and distributor licenses, starting with a three-day suspension for a first violation and escalating to 30 days for repeat offenses.
When Would the Illinois Flavored Tobacco Ban Start?
If approved, the ban would take effect June 1, 2026.
The question now: Should Illinois move forward with a statewide flavored tobacco ban, or is this government overreach for adult consumers?
