After over 60+ years, the Belvidere Assembly Plant will be closing its doors indefinitely on February 28th, 2023, leaving hundreds of employees without jobs.

This news has come as a shock to many, as the plant has been a staple in the area for decades.  The plant is currently owned by Stellantis, responsible for the production of the Jeep Cherokee.

However, the company has decided to halt production at the Belvidere location due to increased expenses associated with the electric vehicle industry and other factors.

To put it into perspective, nearly 1,400 people are currently employed at the plant.  That's 1,400 families affected by this unfortunate news.

Hourly and salaried employees have already been notified and Governor J.B. Pritzker's response team from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity are now helping workers find new employment as soon as possible. [abc7Chicago]

UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada said the union was s “deeply angered by Stellantis’ decision to idle the Belvidere Assembly plant without a plan for future product.” - Euronews

This serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of any industry and the impact it can have on those who rely on it to support their families.
