AI Phone Scams Are Targeting Illinois Families — Here’s What To Know

Artificial intelligence is making life more convenient in many ways, but it's also giving scammers a powerful new tool.  Across Illinois, families are being warned about the rise of AI phone scams that use voice-cloning technology to trick victims into sending money.

These scams often start with a panicked phone call.  The voice on the other end sounds exactly like a loved one - a child, grandparent, or sibling - claiming they're in trouble and need money immediately.  The catch?  It's not actually them.  Scammers can now use artificial intelligence to clone someone's voice using just a few seconds of audio pulled from social media videos, voicemails, or online posts.

According to warnings from the FTC, imposter scams remain one of the most commonly reported types of fraud, and AI is making them even harder to detect.  Criminals often create urgent scenarios - car accidents, arrests, medical emergencies - pressuring victims to act quickly and secretly.  They may demand payment through wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.

Older adults are especially vulnerable, but anyone can fall victim.

So how can Illinois families protect themselves?

First, create a "safe word" - a simple question or phrase only your real loves one would know.  If you receive a suspicious call, ask for that code.  Second, slow down.  Scammers rely on panic.  Hang up and call your loved one directly using a number you already have saved.  Never send money or share personal information based solely on an incoming call.

It's also smart to limit how much person audio and information is publicly available online.  Adjust privacy settings on social media accounts whenever possible.
