Plants can actually get worse than poison ivy.

Authorities are warning about coming into contact with a dangerous plant, according to NBC Chicago.

The plant is called the giant hogweed and as the University of Illinois puts it: "it looks like Queen Anne's lace on steroids".

It's dangerous because of it's clear toxic sap that can really do a number to your skin.

Federally, it's listed as a noxious weed but the Illinois DNR has designated it as an exotic weed, meaning you could get in trouble if you buy it, transport it, or plant it.

Giant hogweed can get up to 14 ft. tall and the head of it can be more than 2 ft.

Aptly named plant.

If you touch the clear sap it secretes, you could end up with severe burns, skin blisters, and permanent scars just 24 hours after contact. So even though it's pretty, probably don't touch it or pick it for a bouquet.

The stem of giant hogweed is hairy, hollow, and has purple splotches. There have been multiple reports of finding the plant in Illinois. But the good news: no new reports have been made spotting the plant since 2016 and currently, it's been considered eradicated in Illinois.

But that doesn't mean it's totally gone. Illinois DNR warns that the plant can thrive in moist soils and along partially shaded areas, like riverbanks, old railroads, or wooded areas.

If you know you'll have to work near giant hogweed, it's advised that you wear gloves, long pants, long sleeves, and then thoroughly clean your tools and clothes with soapy water or alcohol.
