Some recent news from Deerfield has put a spotlight on a major shake‑up in the Illinois job market.

Walgreens announced this week that it will be laying off 469 corporate employees across Illinois as part of a reorganization effort under new ownership. The layoffs affect workers at the company’s headquarters in Deerfield as well as offices in Chicago and Danville, with 60‑day notices already delivered to impacted employees as required under Illinois' state guidelines.

Walgreens was taken private in 2025 after a roughly $10 billion acquisition by private equity firm Sycamore Partners. Since that buyout, the company has implemented a series of cost‑cutting moves, including trimming staff and ending paid holidays, in an effort to reshape its operations and focus more on in‑store service and customer experience.

Although The Layoffs Affect Only A Relatively Small Portion Of Walgreens' Total Workforce, It's The Latest In A String Of Employment Changes In Illinois

As of early 2026, Walgreens has around 533 retail locations in Illinois, making them the pharmacy chain with the most store locations in the state ahead of competitors like CVS and Jewel‑Osco.

In recent weeks, other major employers have also announced workforce reductions. APL Logistics and S&S Activewear disclosed mass layoffs in the Chicago area as part of restructuring efforts, affecting hundreds of workers. Meanwhile, manufacturing plants such as Brake Parts Inc. have shuttered facilities and laid off employees earlier this winter.

For workers and communities across Illinois, that means adaptation is increasingly part of the business landscape.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by layoffs, resources like job retraining, unemployment services, and local employment centers can offer support during the transition.
