Thinking back to my own childhood, I'm pretty sure that my dad would have laughed loudly at the idea of having a birthday party for me at a home improvement warehouse store.

Why? Well, even though he did his best to teach me about using tools, building things, measuring things, sawing, hammering, and otherwise maiming perfectly good wood and drywall with power tools, he recognized that my best skills were holding the light for him and fetching him a beer.

So, while I wouldn't have been the ideal candidate for a DIY birthday party, your kid, obviously being smarter and more dexterous than me, just might be.

When I think of kids party places, I...well, don't think of Lowe's. I don't go to Chuck E. Cheese looking for belt sanders, either.(Getty Images)

Earlier This Week Lowe's Announced That They Would Be Offering Birthday Parties For Kids At 10 Of Their Stores Across The United States--And Illinois Has One Of Those Stores In Naperville

Other participating stores include:

  • Brooklyn, New York
  • North Bergen, New Jersey
  • Orem, Utah
  • Huntersville, North Carolina
  • Noblesville, Indiana
  • Franklin, Tennessee
  • Eastlake, California
  • Central Dallas, Texas
  • North Peoria, Arizona

I totally get it. Home improvement shows are very popular, as is HGTV, an entire network devoted to convincing you that you can demo and remodel a home beautifully using only a sledgehammer and shiplap in a little over 52 minutes.

Lowe's calls this new venture "Build a Birthday" parties, and their pricing for the events starts at $349. Here's how it works, according to BusinessInsider.com:

The "Build a Birthday" parties provide children with an experience building miniature projects like wooden castles and race cars with their friends. Parties are available for kids ages 5 and over, and they include safety goggles, aprons, party construction hats, and a Lowe's employee supervising projects. The parties last for 2 hours, and up to 20 kids can attend.

You, as the proud parent, may choose to upgrade the package with food, drinks, and desserts from Domino's, and/or party favors from Lowe's like backpacks, t-shirts, and water bottles. (For more information on booking a birthday party, click here)

I'm also available for holding flashlights and grabbing beers for the parents.
