What a fascinating find of Illinois history that most people know nothing about. A new exploration of an abandoned Illinois property has uncovered a forgotten marker that marks where a hero in Illinois lost his life battling bandits on the prairie back in 1841.

Kudos to ObsoleteVoids on YouTube for this remarkable discovery. Here's her description of what they discovered during a recent Illinois adventure:

"While exploring this property, we discovered a mysterious stone marker connected to John Campbell, a community leader and Captain of the Regulators and the long-forgotten conflict between the Regulators and the Prairie Bandits. What started as a simple exploration quickly turned into a deep dive into real 1800s history, law vs outlaw, and a story most people don’t even know exists."

The discovery of the site of John Campbell's death happens just after the 7 minute mark of her video.

The Illinois Historical Society has a great backstory about how John Campbell was truly a hero in the war with bandits back in the mid-1800's. They say that outlaws who called themselves the Banditti of the Prairie were active in horse stealing and murder. The Regulators who John Campbell led gave the bandits 20 days to leave Illinois. The outlaws decided to kill John Campbell and another Regulator leader. They succeeded in ending John's life on June 27, 1841, but his death would lead to the ultimate defeat of the prairie bandits.

As she mentions in her video exploration, the marker isn't a gravestone and is not the burial place for John Campbell, but it is the place where his life ended which ultimately ended the bandits crimes. Hard to believe the marker where a hero in Illinois fell just sits in the middle of an abandoned farm property now.
