History of the Anderson Japanese Gardens
It all started with a trip to Oregon. John Anderson, a Rockford, Illinois native, was on a business trip when he visited the beautiful Portland Japanese Garden, and instantly fell in love with it. Inspired by its serenity and design, he returned home with a vision: to create a Japanese garden of his own for the Rockford and Chicago area. That was the beginning of what would become Anderson Japanese Gardens.

If you find yourself in the Rockford or Chicago area and need a break from the hustle of everyday life, take some time to unwind with a walk through this beautiful garden. It’s the perfect place to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature.
And who knows, just like John Anderson, you might leave inspired to bring a little of that peace and beauty to your own hometown…or even your backyard.
