Here's another scam to add to your list! It will come as no shock to you that there is another scam reported by yet another Sheriff's office in Wisconsin. It seems like the scams are never-ending these days.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office shared details of yet another new scam circulating in the area earlier this month. They detailed what the scam entails and what you can do to stay safe.

This scam could happen anywhere and since it is already in Wisconsin, it could definitely pop up in the Northland!

How The Scam Works

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office says that locals are receiving fake emails pretending to be from the Social Security Administration. The letters say that their Social Security numbers were used in 'illicit activities' and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

As with so many other scams, this causes a major sense of urgency and panic at first. This leads people to throw all common sense out the window, even just temporarily. The emails look realistic, which also leads people to think it's real at first.

What Happens Next?

According to the warning put out by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department, the letters also state that if someone doesn't pay, they could be arrested.

As always, never act right away if something seems off. The Social Security Administration will never ask you for money. If you get a letter like this, call them directly or the local police department before acting upon anything.
