Apply Now For Special Sandhill Wildlife Area Deer Hunt In Wisconsin
Wisconsin's 9,150-acre Sandhill Wildlife Area lies within the bed of ancient Glacial Lake Wisconsin, an expansive region of flat, marshy land interspersed with forests covering parts of seven counties in central Wisconsin.
A small herd of American bison, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, Canada geese, ducks, loons, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, shorebirds, songbirds, hawks, owls, and furbearers all call Sandhill Wildlife Management Area home.
The area is managed by a team of Wisconsin DNR wildlife technicians, a wildlife biologist, a forester, and the property supervisor, it's the perfect environment for wildlife research.
Trapping in the area requires a special permit. Deer hunting is generally limited to the annual Learn to Hunt Deer event for youth and first-time adult hunters. However, the DNR sometimes institutes additional deer hunts, and one such hunt has been scheduled.
Apply Now For A Special Sandhill Wildlife Management Area Deer Hunt
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently announced it is accepting applications through September 20 for a special firearm deer hunt at Sandhill Wildlife Area.
This managed hunt will give hunters a unique opportunity to hunt deer on the property while helping the DNR meet deer management objectives.
“This special deer hunt will provide hunters an additional harvest opportunity and assist the department in reaching our deer harvest goal for Sandhill Wildlife Area,” said Darren Ladwig, DNR wildlife biologist.
Ladwig adds that their goal is to maintain the deer population this year and additional hunter effort is needed to achieve that goal.
The 2-day hunt will occur on Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, 2024. Hunters will be issued an either-sex permit and an antlerless-only permit valid for Sandhill Wildlife Area.
This hunt will be open to licensed hunters and restricted to firearms (rifle/shotgun). Successful applicants will be required to review the special hunting rules and regulations for Sandhill Wildlife Area before the hunt.
