I have lived my entire life in Illinois and never knew we had a state song. I never learned about it in school and recently found out, we have one. I could picture being taught about it in elementary school and singing it. So was there no Illinois song back in my childhood? Well, it was written in the 1800's. So, it was there all the time, just waiting for me to learn and sing to an assembly full of teachers and parents.

The official state song of Illinois, simply titled "Illinois," is a heartfelt tribute to the state’s history, landscapes, and people. Written in 1893 by C.H. Chamberlain, with music composed by Archibald Johnston, the song captures Illinois’ essence, celebrating everything from its prairies to its role in American history.

ILLINOIS STATE SNACK IS POPCORN

The lyrics of "Illinois" paint vivid images of the state's natural beauty and pride. The opening lines, “By thy rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois,” pay homage to the many rivers that traverse Illinois, like the Illinois, Mississippi, and Chicago rivers, which were instrumental in shaping the state's economy and culture. The song also celebrates the vast, fertile prairies that make Illinois a major agricultural hub, often referred to as the "Heart of the Midwest."

As the song progresses, it delves into Illinois' role in key historical events. References to the state’s involvement in the Civil War honor the brave soldiers from Illinois who fought for freedom and unity. It highlights Illinois’ contributions to American industry and culture, as well as its people’s steadfast spirit. This pride is particularly significant because Illinois was home to President Abraham Lincoln, whose legacy of equality and justice continues to be a point of pride for the state.
