I started seeing green porch lights the week after Halloween and had no idea that there is a quite beautiful meaning behind them.

Have you seen a green porch light?

The first green porch light I drove past on my way to work one morning didn't really stand out to me. That quickly changed.

Over the next five days, about a half dozen houses not far from one another, had green lights outside their front doors. That stood out.

Honestly, as we all tend to do on the drive to work, my mind drifted and I'm almost positive I told myself that the green lights were some kind of Christmas or Holidays thing and didn't give it another thought. Until today.

I finally know the meaning behind the green porch lights

I discovered that Walmart is connected to why so many people had green lights on the front of their homes. In 2013, Walmart made a commitment to provide jobs to any honorably discharged U.S. veteran.

The ad campaign that followed asked people to switch to a green porch light as a way to recognize and show appreciation for veterans in their community.

From Green Light Vet on Facebook,

Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being.

Greenlight is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement.

America’s veterans are some of our nation’s bravest, hardest-working men and women. However, it’s hard to show them the appreciation they deserve when, back home and out of uniform, they’re more camouflaged than ever. Greenlight A Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green.

Once you get your green light switched, you share your support on social media by taking a photo of your green light and sharing it with the hashtag #GreenlightAVet
