I was pretty lucky growing up. My parents liked to do activities as a family so I got the opportunity to experience a lot of cool stuff. We lived in the suburbs just outside of Chicago so it was just a short drive into the city. My family spent a lot of time there exploring.

Back in those days, things were a lot more affordable. A family could go check out an attraction, park, eat, and even get a souvenir for a lot less money than it is today. It's gotten so expensive people can't cover the cost of going to multiple places throughout the year.

They have to pick and choose where they want to spend their hard-earned money. Unfortunately, these kids today won't be able to experience all the fun things I got to do growing up in Illinois. That makes me kind of sad to think about.

Luckily, there are opportunities to visit some of the museums around Chicago for free. That's a huge deal because they've all gotten so expensive. There is a sacrifice. Those no admission fee days don't happen at the most ideal days and times, so if you want to take advantage you will have to plan in advance.

Here are some museum free days in Chicago during September.

Museum of Science and Industry: 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, and 30

Shedd Aquarium: 10 all day and nights 3, 17, and 24

Chicago History Museum: 2 and 25

Field Museum: Wednesdays

Museum of Contemporary Art: Tuesdays

Art Institute of Chicago: Thursdays after 5 p.m.

Adler Planetarium: Wednesdays after 4 p.m.
