RPD announced the department would be getting new squad cars through funding and, finally, we know who's responsible for the new look and the reason behind it.

According to mystateline.com, the City of Rockford purchased 28 Patrol Ford Explorers and 11 unmarked vehicles, which the Rockford Police Department has begun to use on city streets. But the story is about who came up with the graphics redesign and why.

RPD chose a team of officers to lead on the on the purchases, "inside and out." They decided against the old look blue/white look in lieu of the traditional a black and white look. The new graphics will be visible at night to allow officers to be easily spotted in the dark.

Mystateline.com reports the old squad cars will eventually be phased out when more funds are available.
