A pack 40 dogs were seen running towards a Freeport home which gave officials enough information to tell that something was wrong.

This story has completely broken my heart on so many different levels. WTVO reports that over 150 animals were discovered in an apparently abandoned home in Freeport.

A pack of 40 dogs or so were seen running down Heitter Road. The dogs kept going to the home at 1358 Heitter Road. This gave animal control enough reason to believe that something strange was happening there.

To their surprise, when searching the house, they found over 150 dogs and cats inside of the home. It looked as if the house was abandoned. Among the animals, 36 of the dogs and 29 of the cats were found dead.

As of now, the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department are searching for the tenant.

My heart breaks for these poor animals. They didn't ask for this type of treatment, and I feel bad for the tenant. I'm sure the tenant didn't take in all of these animals just so they would be treated poorly. It's a sad day all around.

For now, the surviving animals will be sent to shelters across the region.
