Illinois scores a big hit by going green on New Year's Day.

I was waiting with anticipation of what was going to happen on New Years Day in Illinois and particularly, Rockford. As of 12am on January 1, 2020, recreational marijuana was officially legal in the state.

In the past in other states, people came out in full force to support it. Would it be the same for Illinois? The answer is yes and I'm not surprised by the outcome.

As soon as I saw some dispensaries would be opening at 6 am, I knew this was going to be a big deal. Fans started lining up hours before, to be some of the first in the state to buy legal weed.

If you didn't know exactly what was going on, you might have thought a new iPhone was being released. Hundreds of people waited hours in line in the cold to make a purchase.

Some locations enforced limits to ensure everyone got the opportunity. Others had to close ahead of schedule because they ran out of the product.

Today, a dispensary in Rockford is running shuttle bus service because their parking lot isn't big enough to accommodate customers.

Like the release of a new blockbuster movie, it will be interesting to see what the opening week numbers end up looking like. Also, will the demand continues to be huge.

At this point, it looks like Illinois made the right decision.

Did you go out and buy legal pot on New Year's Day?
