Plenty of rock bands have two guitar players or multiple vocalists, but few have had two drummers. The idea seems odd. When utilized it provides a full sound that covers spaces that even Keith Moon couldn't cover. Ok, maybe I went too far on that one.

The Allman Brothers Band use two drummers. So have The Doobie Brothers, King Crimson, Frank Zappa and most famously the Grateful Dead. For the last couple of decades of the band's existence one of the highlights of the second set of their live shows was the Drums/Space section. This would begin as the band was fading out of a song. The drummers would then take off on an improvisational excursion for ten minutes or so before the other musicians would join for a trippy segment before roaring into either a new song or they would revisit a song they began earlier in the set.

On today's Brizz Record Bin, we salute founding member of the Grateful Dead, Bill Kruetzmann. Bill kept the rhythm for the band from day one. Mickey Hart was with the band for the majority of it's existence and is a drum historian in his own right. Happy birthday to Bill. He hits the big 6-8. Here is the band ripping through 'Alabama Getaway' on Saturday Night Live in 1980.
