Illinois residents understand how severe winters can become. Freezing temperatures and harsh winds combined with dry indoor air create the perfect conditions for skin to become dry and irritated. During winter your skin suffers from dryness and irritation so what causes this issue and how can you maintain its softness and moisture? I know the bottom of my feet feels like sandpaper and my back gets dry and itchy, so thankful for backscratchers, but it's so easy to break the skin open from scratching because of the dryness.  Let’s break it down.

Why Does Cold Weather Cause Dry Skin?
The humidity levels in Illinois decrease substantially during winter weather. Because cold air carries less water vapor than warm air your skin becomes dehydrated rapidly after exposure to cold weather. Heating systems inside your home reduce air moisture levels which result in drier skin.

In Illinois winds play a role in drying out skin by weakening its natural protective layer. Your skin struggles to hold moisture which results in flaky areas and painful cracks and irritation.

1. Use a Rich Moisturizer
Substitute lightweight lotions with heavy creams and ointments. Select products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and shea butter to enhance your skin's moisture retention.

2. Limit Hot Showers - ( this one is hard for me, I love showers! )
While hot showers provide temporary relief on cold days they remove natural oils from your skin. After showering use lukewarm water and apply moisturizer right away.

3. Invest in a Humidifier
A humidifier in your house replenishes air moisture which keeps your skin from drying out too much.

4. Stay Hydrated
Sufficient water intake ensures your skin remains hydrated throughout. Water-rich foods such as cucumbers along with herbal teas serve as beneficial hydrating agents.

5. Wear Protective Clothing
Use scarves and gloves to cover exposed skin against the effects of cold dry air and harsh winds.

These straightforward steps will help you fight winter dryness while maintaining healthy and radiant skin throughout the entire season. Stay warm and moisturized, Illinois!
