For the residents of Illinois, there is a new problem developing, it's with coyotes and the issue is getting worse each week.

Illinois' Big Problem With Coyotes

Until recently, the closest I ever came to a coyote was watching a Roadrunner cartoon. Last summer, I was grilling out and one ran through my backyard. Looking on our neighborhood Facebook page, I saw that I'm not the only one. There had been several sightings. It's becoming more and more common in urban areas.

My mom has a coyote that hangs around her neighborhood too and she lives near Chicago in the suburbs. Back in the day, you never saw them in cities and around people. They would hang out near farms and try to steal chickens.

Earlier this week at O'Hare Airport an airplane hit a coyote during take off. In Chicago, one had to be pulled out of the frozen food section of a grocery store. I don't ever remember hearing stories like that.

Incidents with coyotes like those two are happening all over the state. Apparently, coyotes are becoming a huge problem throughout Illinois. They aren't afraid to be around cities anymore. They are looking for food and the easiest way to get it i by humans.

Since coyotes are becoming much more active in Illinois, authorities suggest not leaving your pets outside for a long time and never by themselves. It's a good idea to keep them on a lease so they're in your control.

Patch

If your garbage is kept outside make sure it's covered, especially if you throw away food. If you spot a coyote, don't go near it. Your best bet is to slowly back away and make lots of loud noises to scare it off.
