Are Rockford Drivers Going To Be Driving Faster On I-90?

When you are driving on the interstate, do you ever go the speed limit posted? One Illinois congressman thinks you don't and wants to raise the speed limit on the interstatesA few years ago the speed limit was raised in Illinois on interstates from 65 to 70 mph. Now a representative from the Chicago area wants to raise that even higher.

The Rockford Register Star has a story about State Senator Jim Oberweis wanting to raise the speed limit from 70 to 75 mph on interstates throughout Illinois, except in Chicago. What is the reasoning for it? According to the article, he has his own proof why.

"I drove this week from Aurora to Springfield on I-55, I had the cruise control set at 74 mph, and I passed very few cars," he said. "A strong majority of cars were passing me going 75 to 80."

I can understand where he is coming from. If everyone is going 5 mph over, then why just make it at that speed. My concern is that when you keep raising the bar, eventually you are not going to be able to jump over the bar and you are going to get hurt. If someone wants to go 82 on a 75 mph interstate, the speed is going to be a problem if there is an accident.

My feelings are shared with David Braxford, who is the executive director of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.

"Generally, faster speeds create more risk. Unfortunately, for most people who are driving today, the last thing they need are more risks. We are very poor risk managers when it comes to operating vehicles."
