To quote Mr. Spock, "This is illogical." How is it that there has not been train service between Rockford and Chicago since 1981? Thirty-three years? Do people not commute between these two cities? I know the Forest City lost out to Aurora as the second biggest city in Illinois, but still...c'mon!!!!! Well, I can bury my outrage for another day because Amtrak service is returning to Rockford starting in late 2015.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, there will be one roundtrip daily between Union Station in Chicago and a temporary station on 7th Street in Rockford. Eventually they will construct a permanent Main Street station. Stops will also include Belvidere, Huntley and Elgin. The plan is to eventually continue the route west through Freeport, Galena and finally Dubuque, Ia.

I think I'm like most guys. Trains intrigue me. They're cool. Riding the rails on a freighter. Something me and friends talked about but never did. Of course, it sounds cool until a railroad worker splits your skull or worse.
