So far, the DC cinematic universe hasn’t had a great start. With reviews of Man of Steel, and this year’s Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad leaning towards the negative, the folks in charge are trying anything they can think of to get their next few films in development back on track. Whether those fixes will actually work remains to be seen, but at least the movies’ lackluster performance is being noticed by those on the production side.

Today, Variety reports that the CEO of Time Warner, Jeff Bewkes, told his investors that he is aware there is “a little room for improvement” in the creative direction of Warner Bros.’ upcoming slate of films.

The DC Comics characters … have a little more lightness in them than maybe what you saw in those movies, so we’re thinking about that.

He said the studio had brought on DC Comics entertainment president Geoff Johns and production head John Berg to help out with guiding the next few releases. Nothing has been changed so far in the current lineup of films scheduled through 2020, with Wonder Woman and Justice League still expected to come out next year.

The strategy worked. The execution did deliver what we wanted to do. We can do a little better on the creative.

He was positive about some aspects of the DC films that have already come out, saying that both Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Ben Affleck were well-received.

The main thing was to launch DC and reinvigorate it with the fan base. The reboot of Batman with Ben Affleck (in the role) was a big success.

It’ll be interesting to see whether this means any big changes for how the next outings in the DC cinematic universe are dealt with. More jokes? Reshoots? Different characters? Radical changes in current characterizations? The studio has been insisting on Justice League’s “lighter tone” in particular, but we won’t know whether it succeeds or fails until the movie hits theaters in 2017.
