Take a peek out your passenger window the next time you are headed west on the Auburn/Spring Creek bridge in Rockford and you might catch a glimpse of an odd rock formation that's settled on the frozen Rock River.

The big question is, how did it get there?

Nearly 20 large rocks circle three other rocks about 30 feet from the west bank of the Rock River near Rockford's Edgewater neighborhood.

The circle of rocks is neatly arranged, making it difficult to imagine them being thrown or slid across the ice into place.

It's also highly unlikely this was the work of someone marking their territory for ice fishing.

Signs on Harlem Boulevard, which runs along the west bank of the river, clearly indicate the area is off limits to those wanting to fish.
