Six local police officers were honored last night for their incredible act of heroism.

I have the up most respect for police officers.

Does my heart skip a beat every time I see one ahead on the interstate? Sure. Do I get nervous, even when I know I'm doing nothing wrong, when I see one? Of course. We all do.

Why? Probably because they are such incredible human beings.

Every day, these men and women suit up in their uniform, hop in their squad cars and risk their lives for the safety of us. I can't imagine how stressful that is for not only the officer, but for their families waiting for them to return every night. Many officers have lost their lives protecting our neighborhoods and communities.

Six officers in Loves Park went above and beyond their call of duty.

If you remember, last month an apartment caught on fire. It was at the 410 block of Applewood Lane on May 2.

Several people were trapped inside. Six officers; Brian Britnell, Kurt Cutler, Colleen Gaspard, Sean Kahly, Sergeant Mike Landman & Cherry Valley Officer Jason Personette sprang into action.

The officers, who do not have equipment or training the firemen do while using ladders, were able to rescue 14 people that night, including 3 young children.

All six of them were honored for helping out the firefighters and being true heroes to our community. Congratulations to the officers!
