Shots Fired into a Crowd in DeKalb Sunday Night

UPDATE (10/13/17 4:17 pm) : Police have made an arrest in connection with an incident where shots were fired into a crowd in DeKalb this past Sunday.

DeKalb Police have announced that, officers identified the subject responsible for the shooting as Michael Distasio, from North Aurora, IL. On October 10th, an arrest warrant was issued for Distasio for reckless discharge of a firearm. His bond was set at $100,000 dollars.

With assistance of the Aurora Police Department, Distasio was located and arrested in Aurora, Illinois in the evening hours of October 11th. On October 12th the vehicle used during the commission of this offense was located and seized as evidence. Police say the the investigation into this shooting is ongoing.

ARRESTED: Michael Distasio, 19 years of age, resides in the 600 block of Thompson Ave in North Aurora, Illinois. Distasio is currently incarcerated at the Kane County Jail.

The fourth shooting in DeKalb, in the last two weeks, occurred late Sunday night. The latest, according to NIU police, involved shots fired into a crowd. On Sunday night, NIU police issued a safety bulletin that indicated:

…at approximately 8:20 p.m., DeKalb and NIU Police responded off-campus to the 800 block of Russell Road for a report of shots fired. Witnesses observed three suspects, one with a firearm fire several rounds into a crowd of people. The suspect fled the area southbound on Russell Rd in a white Lincoln Town Car with damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.

Police need your help in locating the three suspects are described as follows:

  • Light-skin male, 5’7”-5’8” tall, approximately 300 lbs., wearing a blue Chicago Bears hooded sweatshirt
  • Dark-skin male wearing a hooded sweatshirt
  • Dark-skin male wearing hooded sweatshirt

This incident marks the fourth shooting in DeKalb in the last 14 days and is making residents nervous. In fact, The City of DeKalb recently ranked #4 in a study that ranked the college town as one Northern Illinois’ top 5 dangerous cities after dark

Police says that, at this time, there are no reported injuries and no imminent threat to the safety of the campus or surrounding community.
