Ridiculous Number Of Firework Complaints Made To Rockford 911
Fireworks are illegal in Illinois and there are some people, myself included, that don't care for neighbors lighting off fireworks - it scares the dog, wakes up the kids, keeps us from sleep when we have to be up at 3 a.m., etc. But, barring a fire, you won't hear about me calling 911 over fireworks. Maybe others should do the same.
Think about it, are fireworks really a good reason to take time from calls that actually require emergency services?? Why tie up police and other first responders over something that is bothersome. Again, a fire or injury definitely merits a call to 911 or authorities. Simply calling to report fireworks that are likely happening all over town is just unnecessary. Albeit it illegal, if you and your family are safe - let it go.
According to Kristin Crowley at WREX, 300 fireworks-related calls were made in a six-hour period the night of July 4, between 6 p.m. and midnight. There were a total of over 400 calls made during the holiday.
The Rockford Fire Department says the 911 call center received 427 calls for fireworks from 2 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday.
Launching illegal fireworks will not stop because someone called the cops. I lived in outside of the city limits of Springfield, MO where fireworks are legal and guess what? People in the city still set off fireworks. Though annoying, barring harm, just let people celebrate America's independence with fireworks, even if it is illegal. Again, as long as there isn't fire or injuries.
OSF Saint Anthony reported only three people were treated for minor injuries due to fireworks, accord to WREX. Point made.
