There is very little that hasn't been said about the bitter break-up of the Beatles. The short version of the story is that it was Paul vs the other three. After their influential manager Brian Epstein died in 1967, the group didn't have that figurehead to take care of the business side of things. Paul seemed to have volunteered for the job, but the tensions began to rise. John Lennon claimed that he told the others that he was quitting the band in 1969, only to be persuaded to not announce anything publicly. However, in April 1970 Paul made it official. He was quitting the Beatles. Lawsuits were filed and the band really went though what Lennon called a divorce.

I have always found the solo stuff put out in the first couple of years after the band's split very interesting. After years of being relegated to the back seat, George Harrison released a brilliant triple-album "All Things Must Pass." Many claim it's the best of all of their solo albums. That could be true. Lennon released the intense 'primal scream' album that included "Mother", "God" and "Working Class Hero." An open wound of greatness, followed by "Imagine." Ringo put out a Ringo record. Paul released "McCartney." An album full of the great melodies and well-crafted pop that you would expect. George played on some of John's stuff. John played on Ringo's records and Ringo in turn played with all of them.

After a while the legal dust settled and they went about their lives. It's known that John and Paul did get together many times and remained friends up until Lennon's assassination in 1980. Writing that just doesn't seem right, does it? John frickin' Lennon assassinated? That's messed up...Anyway, Paul released the great album "Band on the Run" in 1974. My favorite cut from it is "Let Me Roll It." It's been said many many times that Paul wrote that as a nod to John's style. The guitar riff is reminiscent of Lennon's "Cold Turkey" sound and the singing is very John-like. Paul has said recently that as much as he agrees as it does have that John sound, it was not purposely done that way.
